Jon Gonzalez is a young man with a mission: to design equipment to improve mobility for paraplegic individuals like his dad. We’re proud to help launch his biomedical engineering career by presenting him with the 2021 Donald B . Wilbur Scholarship.
Jon is a graduate of Xavier High School in Middletown and lives in Meriden. He plans to begin his engineering studies in the fall at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. His guidance counselor describes him as extremely kind, hard working, optimistic, and unassuming, saying “Jonathan sees the best in situations and people.”
The $1,000 scholarship Jon has received is given each year by Liberty Bank to a local high school graduate planning to major in engineering or a technical field. It is named in honor of Don Wilbur, a former chairman of the bank’s board of directors, and Don selects the recipient himself after reviewing the most qualified nominees.
Please join us in wishing Jon the very best as he begins his college career and the road to his goal of becoming a biomechanical engineer!
Don Wilbur became a corporator of Liberty Bank in 1993 and joined the board of directors two years later. He was elected chairman in 2004 and served in that role until his retirement from the board in 2008. He retired in 2002 as plant manager of Unilever HPC, USA in Clinton. A graduate of the University of Connecticut, Don joined Chesebrough-Pond’s USA in 1970 and held various positions over the years at plants in Alabama, Missouri, and Connecticut.
