Syed Ali, Naila Shakir and family have lived in the Broad St. neighborhood of New Britain for 17 years, but just lately became homeowners. On July 6, they were honored guests at the dedication ceremony of their new, two-family affordable home on Beaver St., made possible by Neighborhood Housing Services of New Britain (NHS), the City of New Britain, the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority, Eversource, and other funders, including Liberty Bank Foundation.
The family now occupies the first-floor, three-bedroom unit and will rent the second-floor, two-bedroom unit to low-income tenants. Rental income will help defray the family’s living expenses and contribute to their home’s affordability.
Both units have high energy-efficiency ratings, making utility costs economical, and are equipped for the easy installation of solar panels in the future.
NHS Executive Director John Kukulka hosted the dedication ceremony, and well wishes were offered by New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart; Alanna Kabel, director, HUD Hartford; and Karl Kilduff, executive director, CHFA.
