All of us at Liberty Bank Foundation would like to add our hearty congratulations to the many others that are flowing in. Chris George, Executive Director, Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services, was just named the 2017 Man of the Year by the New Haven Register. And, it’s most deserved recognition!
Chris’s organization, IRIS, is one of our grantees and Chris himself won our 2016 Willard M. McRae Community Diversity Award.
If ever there was a time when diversity, peace and understanding needed to be championed, it’s now. Chris and his team work tirelessly to make sure the United States of America remains the shining beacon of welcome and hope for those seeking a new way of life.
While the immigration issue is gaining all the headlines, Chris and his team steadfastly go about their never-ending mission to resettle people escaping war, famine, poverty, and hopelessness. Last year, IRIS helped 350 people … to resolve legal issues, get here, find a place to live, locate a school for children, make connections with a community and so much more.
In his McRae Diversity Award acceptance speech, Chris said that lots of people ask him why his group helps people from other lands when there are so many Americans needing help. To which he responds that, in this land of plenty, “We can do both.”
Thanks, Chris, for your outspoken leadership on behalf of those with no power and no options. Every time one of your families lands on our shores, the Statue of Liberty secretly smiles. read the article
