It’s tax filing season–and that means that hundreds of VITA volunteers around our state are ready with free tax filing assistance for taxpayers who qualify.
A national program, VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) provides free tax preparation services to low-to-moderate-income individuals and families earning less than $57,000 a year. VITA is operated in much of Connecticut by a partnership of the Connecticut Association for Human Services (CAHS), United Way 211, and the Internal Revenue Service, along with numerous local nonprofits.
Each year, IRS-trained volunteers are certified to prepare simple tax returns and screen taxpayers for special tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit, that can help them to make ends meet. Visiting a VITA site instead of a paid tax preparer saves each filer an average of $200. Taxes can be filed electronically, in which case refunds are received within 7-10 days.
If you or someone you know earned a household income of $57,000 or less in 2020, you may be eligible for free tax filing from an IRS-certified VITA preparer.
When the pandemic hit last winter, VITA quickly moved online, providing safety and even more convenience for taxpayers by allowing them to work with a VITA volunteer from home and submit documents electronically instead of having to come to a VITA location. This year, virtual VITA is available again, along with limited in-person and drop off services–these are available by appointment only through 2-1-1 Infoline.

Each year, VITA helps thousands of low-to-moderate-income Connecticut taxpayers to ensure they take advantage of every tax credit they are entitled to. Their refund checks go to support their families and our local economy.
Liberty is proud to have supported VITA over the past 15 years through grant funding and employee volunteers!
