Young professionals are qualified and eager to work in the state, but can they afford to?

Some business owners may not realize it, but young professionals typically have a difficult time finding housing they can afford in Middlesex County. Did you know that:

• 53% of Middletown’s rental units have a gross rent over $1,000 per month, and
• 86% of Old Saybrook’s 712 rental units have a gross rent over $1,000 per month.

Especially for recent grads, swinging rent at this level and paying down educational debt may be out of the realm of possibility.

An Affordable Housing Forum sponsored by the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce and Liberty Bank Foundation will shed light on this issue, and demonstrate that affordable housing is the lynch pin to attracting and retaining young professionals to the state. more
