When people think about their hungry neighbors, West Hartford is not top of mind. However, the good folks at Farm to Family, Inc., a Liberty Bank Foundation grantee, can tell you different. They asked us to support their Weekend Backpack program in town, and we readily agreed.
The program initially came about when two sisters related a story to their mom from a classmate: she and her family had nothing to eat during weekends. One backpack filled with food led to another, and today students at four West Hartford schools (among others) and their families benefit from the food assistance.
The Weekend Backpack Program is run by volunteers who load backpacks with nine pounds of nutritious food — enough for a family — and then deliver the backpacks to school offices. Students pick up their filled backpacks on Friday and then return them empty of Mondays.
West Hartford’s Charter Oak School was the first to participate, more than 10 years ago. In 2015, the Smith School joined, and now … thanks in part to our grant … Bugbee and Wolcott Schools will also take part.
We know kids do best in school when their stomachs aren’t rumbling, so we’re pleased to provide yummy for the tummy for more 100 kids and their families in West Hartford who would otherwise go without, if not for the Weekend Backpack Program.
